Farmhouse Style Coffee Table

I am so excited to share this post with you! This table turned out far better than I even imagined!

I found an old coffee table at a thrift store and had to buy it when I saw the legs; they were so chunky and incredible! My original plan was to tear the legs off the table and use them to build a new custom coffee table. But time has not been something that we have a lot of lately and we are constantly debating if we want a coffee table in our family room while we have young children--they seem to be a hazard! :)

Anyways... of course I forgot to take a "before" picture, but it was just an old oak finish. I painted the legs bright white, I didn't bother painting the top since I knew I would be covering it.

Once the legs were painted I measured and cut wood to the length I needed, I cut it 1 inch longer than the actual top so it would hang over about a half inch on either side. I used 1x4 finished grade pine from Home Depot (so smooth it hardly took any preparation).

After cutting, I sanded the rough edges. I then moved the wood off the coffee table to stain so I wouldn't drip stain on my freshly painted legs.

I used Minwax "Classic Gray" Stain and LOVED it!! This was the first time I had seen it at Home Depot and decided to try it. It is hands down the best grey stain I have used, and I have probably tried every gray stain out there......   :)

After the boards have been stained and are dry you can screw them on to the top of your table.

I started laying the boards from the middle and worked my way out. I measured the middle of my table and marked it on both sides to help line up my first piece.

Because I have an even number of boards; I had a board on each side of my middle mark. You can barely see the mark in the picture below, I lined the edge of my board up with it.

Then add your first screw to the middle of this board, making sure to get it close to the edge but through the original table top.

Line up the other end and place a screw on that side so your board is secure, then in the middle if you want a row of screws down the middle of your table as well. Keep going until all your boards are secure :)

Now just do a clear coat! I used a polyurathane. I brushed a thick layer on the top and let that dry all day. Then sprayed the whole table with a coat as well.

And it is beautiful!!! I cant wait to do more projects with this gray stain!

I love the feeling these exposed screws give it; just perfect!!

    2. About how long did it take you to do? (If you can remember...) I have a similar table from college years that I want to spruce up and sell. I'm trying to figure out if it would be worth the time and supply money.

    1. Hi Colleen!
I do sand before I paint, and if I am painting a bright white (like this table) I prime first. If you are painting with a darker color you could probably skip primer; especially if you buy a paint with a primer in it :) I have a spray gun that I use for almost all my painting projects. When I am just brushing a use a foam brush or even a foam roller to get a smoother surface!
Hope that helps! Let me know if you have more questions!

    2. Thx Sara,, how di you apply the Stain,, foam roller?

    3. sorry for the delayed response!
If I want a thicker/darker coat I usually use a foam brush (that way I can just throw it away after) for a lighter coat I use a clean rag and wipe the stain on. Make sure if you do that to wear gloves! :) You can even wipe several coats of stain on until you get the desired look..I just feel like I have a little more control with this method :)

    5. Hi! What kind of spray gun do you use? I am just starting to refurbish furniture and finally get my home together, and I'm in the market for an affordable paint sprayer. Any recommendations would be appreciated! Thanks!

    6. I just bought the Wagner Home Decor sprayer. It is not large but does a great job on the 3 projects I just completed in no time! Ordered from Home Depot website, was about $80 & free delivery.Thinned $8 qt can of paint per instructions for sprayer. Did 3 projects and had about 1/4 can of paint left...painted outside, breezes were a bit of a problem though. Worth the money!!!

    8. For years I have used the air compressor spray gun from Harbor Freight, its only about $15 and works great!! Just make sure you always clean it well after use and i like to store it hanging upside down to make sure no paint settles! :)

Love the table. I have a big mirror with a dark color for the frame. Any ideas how i can spruse it up??

    1. Paint is easy and affordable and makes a BIG difference :)
Lightly sand it first, if its metal or plastic you can wipe it down with white vinegar after sanding to help the paint stick better
      Hope that helps

  6. What kind of screws did you use? I'm not seeing black wood screws, only black drywall screws. Is that okay for this kind of project?

    1. So my hubby says drywall screws wont be strong enough. Our screws are actually grey, not pure black, and we just got them from Home Depot, Hope that helps!

  7. I love this table! do you think it would work with a kitchen table?

    1. I have seen similar things done on pinterest so yes ;)
My suggestion would be to seal it really well with a polyurathane. I would do 3-4 good coats. Not only to protect the wood from water and spills but to help seal the cracks from crumbs as well :)

  9. I'm curious if it would work with a kitchen table as well. If it does, that would be a great quick way to get the "farm table" look! I may actually try it with my kitchen table.

    2. I have been wanting to do this to my kitchen table for awhile now and thanks to your step by step, easy instructions, I am motivated to move forward! My kitchen table is the exact style of your coffee table (white, chunky table legs & all). I used to own this style of coffee table, styled with a maple small plank appearance and Hunter Green base, way back in the 90's, which completed the "Country" decor look when paired with my Hunter Green & Beige checked sofa! The 90's Country decor was once as big as Farm House decor is today! Thankfully, my kitchen table legs are already painted a bright white so all I have to do now, is make a trip to Home Depot for my supplies! Thank you for sharing your step by step, easy to follow, instructions! I especially like your tip for using Pine, since it gives such a smooth finish!

  12. Hi there!! Just stumbled on your blog and love it. i love this table. i have an old ikea lack table i would like to try this with. I'm new to DIY so this will be the first piece of furniture to repurpose. if i want to paint the legs of the table i would have to sand and prime first right? Also for the table top I know you said you cut your pieces an inch longer, the pieces at the end also hang over the table right?

    1. How fun! I always recommend sanding and priming first for a better finish. And yes, the end pieces do hang over 😀

  13. How does the table look now that the wood has had time to move and adapt? Could you post an updated photo?

  14. I have the exact same coffee table & was looking for an update. I ran across your post & fell in love. My husband & I worked in the project & it is beautiful! Thanks for the idea & inspiration.

  15. I have this beat up coffee table very similar to this one in my front room. I have for years been saying I'm going to make it beautiful but haven't gotten there yet. Have you ever used chalk paint? I heard if you use chalk paint you don't have to sand or prime. Do you know this to be true? If you have used the chalk paint have you used it in your sprayer?

    2. I have used chalkpaint, and it is fairly easy to use :) However, keep in mind that chalkpaint is a soft finish, made to easily distress so you must seal it after, either with a wax or a poly.
I personally have not sprayed with it but I have a friend who does all the time!
      Hope that helps!

  18. Hi, We love what you did, but the Minwax classic gray stain turned out nothing like you have in the picture! We even used the same pine boards from Home Depot. Did you only put one coat on? Thick? Thin? Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I did a thinner coat. I have noticed that the stain changes depending on how well you stir it before.. most of the paint/color settles on the bottom. So if yours was a lot lighter you probably didnt stir it as much, if its darker try lightly sanding it off :)

  20. Hi Sara,
When painting a black tables legs white, should I prime first?

    1. I would definitely recommend it! Otherwise you will have to do more coats of white paint to try and cover it.

  21. That is exactly what I wanted to do Thank you for showing us yours now I know that is what I want to do. Can't wait going to Home Depot tomorrow. My daughter did her small wall with these boards she stained and then rubbed/streaked a little blue paint in for some color came out great.

  22. I'm going to be starting this project tomorrow. Got allll the stuff. (Except I could only find silver screws...?)

Anyway, my biggest wonderment was the best way to put this is step by step instructions for my left-sided brain to follow. Any tips from anyone who has done it?

  26. What polyurethane did you use?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Was the polyurethane enough to fill up the cracks so that you don't have to scrape crumbs/dirt out when cleaning? Thinking of doing this to my coffee table and end tables and I'm a little worried about the cracks collecting gunk!

  28. Just to make clear, you put the wood directly over the top of the old top? Does it look weird from the side? I have tables with glass inserts and I am wondering if I should take the table top off or just put the pine over it.
    Thanks
